What this does and why it matters
The follow-up is where momentum is kept or lost. Most reps send a limp "great talking to you" that gives the buyer nothing to act on. This skill writes a follow-up that recaps the value discussed, confirms mutual next steps with owners and dates, and makes it effortless for the buyer to move forward.
Inputs to gather
- What was discussed and what mattered most to the buyer.
- The agreed next steps, owners, and dates (or what should be proposed).
- Any resource, proof point, or answer promised in the meeting.
- The relationship temperature (engaged, lukewarm, gone quiet).
Method
1. Anchor to their priority, not your product
Open by reflecting back the outcome the buyer cares about, in their words. This proves you listened and reframes the deal around their goal.
2. Recap the substance briefly
Two or three bullets of what was agreed or uncovered, not a transcript.
3. Confirm next steps as a mutual plan
State who does what by when. A mutual action plan, even a small one, dramatically raises follow-through.
4. Deliver on promises and add one useful thing
Attach or reference what was promised. Adding one genuinely helpful resource keeps you top of mind without nagging.
5. Make the next move frictionless
A single clear ask or a proposed time, not a menu of options.
For a gone-quiet follow-up, drop the recap, change the angle, and give an easy out ("should I assume the timing is not right?"), which often revives replies.
Output format
Deliver the email, then:
## Notes
- Subject line options (2)
- The single next action this email drives
- What was promised and included
Anti-patterns to avoid
- "Just following up" with no new value.
- Recapping everything instead of the one thing that mattered.
- Vague next steps with no owner or date.
- A hard pitch when the moment calls for a light touch.
Example
After a call where the buyer worried about team adoption, the follow-up opens on adoption, recaps the agreed pilot scope, confirms "you loop in your ops lead by Friday, I send the pilot plan Monday", and attaches a one-page adoption guide.
