What this does and why it matters
Competitors broadcast their strategy publicly through their site, content, ads, and social, and most firms never look. This skill runs a structured teardown of a competitor's marketing to reveal how they position, where they invest, what is working for them, and, most valuably, the gaps they leave open, so the user can differentiate and attack white space instead of copying.
Inputs to gather
- The competitor (and their site, if available for research).
- The user's own positioning and audience, for comparison.
- What the user most wants to learn (positioning, channels, content, offers). Use web research where available; never fabricate competitor facts.
Method
1. Read their positioning and messaging
How they describe themselves, the audience they target, the value they claim, and the language they use. Note where their message is strong and where it is generic or vague.
2. Map their channels and content
Where they are active (SEO, paid, social, email, events), what they publish, and what appears to be getting engagement. Infer where they are investing.
3. Analyze their funnel and offers
Their lead magnets, CTAs, and the path from visitor to customer. Note friction and cleverness alike.
4. Find the gaps
The most valuable output. Audiences they ignore, pains they do not address, channels they neglect, and messages they cannot credibly make. Gaps are where the user wins without a head-on fight.
5. Separate what to learn from what to avoid
Some of what they do is worth adopting; some is worth deliberately doing differently to differentiate.
Output format
ALWAYS use:
# Marketing Teardown: [Competitor]
## Positioning and messaging (and where it is weak)
## Channels and content (where they invest, what works)
## Funnel and offers
## Gaps and white space (ranked opportunities)
## What to learn vs what to do differently
## Recommended moves for us
Anti-patterns to avoid
- Admiring the competitor with no actionable takeaway.
- Recommending the user copy them into a head-on fight.
- Fabricating traffic or spend numbers. Mark inferences as inferences.
- Missing the gaps, which are the point.
Example
A teardown finds a rival dominant on paid search but absent on educational content and silent on the mid-market, so the recommended move is to own organic education for mid-market buyers the competitor ignores.
